Office Furniture Ergonomics For Worker Safety

It is imperative to select proper office furniture. Workers who toil at poorly designed, non-ergonomic equipment will likely experience aches and other discomforts that can prevent them from achieving their best. In fact, several studies suggest that employees who work on office furniture that is not ergonomically designed are more likely to experience pain that can cause an annual absence of at least several days.

When choosing your next piece of office furniture, confirm that it is certified as ergonomic. An ergonomic chair has an adjustable height, back, and arms. You want make sure your employees can adjust their office chairs to comfortably fit their needs. Ergonomic chairs should also offer sufficient back support, since one of the most frequent injuries office workers suffer is a low back injury.

When you select reception desks you should make sure that their dimensions fit your particular situation in terms of employees and equipment. Ergonomic tables have information that will tell you the correct height that a desk should be at for maximum employee comfort. You can also purchase adjustable monitors that your employees can use to adapt the equipment to their own preferences.

Ideally, a computer user should be able to look straight at their monitor without having to crouch or slump. As you adjust the monitor riser, make sure that the user is about one arm's length from the monitor. Also, their eyes should align with about the middle to the top three quarters of the screen.

Ergonomics is about more than just preventing injuries and strains at work. For instance, just think about how much time you would save over the course of a year if your employee could simply file papers while seated at his office chair instead of having to get up and walk across the room every time they needed to file something.

Thankfully, ergonomic furniture typically doesn't cost more than normal furniture.
